DICK’S Sporting Goods was founded in 1948 when 18-year-old Dick Stack was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. An avid fisherman, Dick was approached by the store owner to create the list of products needed to get into the fishing tackle business.
When Dick presented his suggestions, the owner told him he was a dumb kid. Dick quit on the spot, believing he knew best. After he recounted the story to his grandmother, she promptly fished $300 out of the savings in her cookie jar, handed it to Dick and told him to do it himself.
Over sixty-five years of hard work later, this $300 and a hunch have proven invaluable. Since day one, DICK’S has stayed strong because it has stayed small at heart.
After successfully turning his bait and tackle enterprise into a full-service sporting goods store, Dick sold the company to his children. Under their guidance, with Ed Stack acting as Chairman and CEO, DICK’S Sporting Goods has expanded to more than 600 locations, all of which are run like the family business we are.
